’16 Hula Skirt is a Maryland-bred filly who was purchased by Housatonic in utero for $50,000 at the 2016 Keeneland January Sale. Consigned on behalf of Housatonic by Shawhan Place to the 2016 Keeneland November Sale, ’16 Hula Skirt sold for $52,000 to the Zayat Stable (who subsequently re-sold her at the 2017 Keeneland September Sale for $170,000).
’16 Hula Skirt is a daughter of Twirling Candy, a Grade 1-winning track record-setter who scored Graded stakes victories on dirt, turf and synthetic surfaces. A son of leading sire Candy Ride, Twirling Candy finished runner-up on the 2015 first crop sires list, with 25 individual winners and 9 stakes horses. His son Danzing Candy won the San Felipe Stakes-G2 earlier in 2016, making him a leading Kentucky Derby candidate.
This filly’s lone sibling to race, Sweet Union, by Langfuhr, placed 3 times at 2- and 3-years-old. She has a 2-year-old half-sister by Candy Ride that was purchased by bloodstock agent Steve Young from the 2016 Keeneland September Sale for $75,000.
