Hula Skirt was purchased by Housatonic for $50,000 at the 2016 Keeneland January Sale, in-foal to Twirling Candy. Subsequently consigned on behalf of Housatonic by Shawhan Place to the 2016 Keeneland November Sale, Hula Skirt sold for $65,000 to Summer Grove Farm while in-foal to First Samurai.
Hula Skirt is by Dixie Union, the sire of Belmont Stakes-G1 winner Union Rags among his 48 career stakes winners, and broodmare sire of Grade 1-winning juveniles New Year’s Day, Mor Spirit and Klimt, plus 2016 Graded stakes winners Mohaymen and Unified.
Bred in partnership by Lane’s End Farm’s W.S. Farish, Hula Skirt is a full-sister to three stakes winners: Grasshopper (who won the Grade 3 Mineshaft Handicap, ran Street Sense to a close decision when 2nd in the Travers-G1 and also placed in the Whitney-G1), Turf War (a Grade 3 winner at 2), and Straw Hat. Hula Skirt also has a yearling sister by Union Rags. Their dam, Grass Skirt, is a daughter of Mr. Prospector and a half-sister to Lerici (by Woodman), the dam of 2016 Grade 1 winner Avenge and stakes winner Lira.
Hula Skirt’s first foal was the 2012 filly Sweet Union (by Langfuhr), who placed at 2 and 3, and she has also produced a 2015 filly by Candy Ride, who sold at the 2016 Keeneland September Sale to top bloodstock agent Steve Young and is now named Riverkeeper. Her 2016 filly by Twirling Candy was bred by Housatonic and sold at the Keeneland November Sale to the Zayat Stable for $52,000.
